The United States' NATO allies expected President Donald Trump to arrive at the alliance's summit in Ankara with the intention of seeking compromises, but they faced his tough stance on key issues. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 7.

"The allies were particularly surprised, given that Trump's aides had stated in advance that the United States expected a constructive two days," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, representatives of NATO countries were hoping for a more diplomatic approach from the American leader, but instead they received a reminder of Washington's demands to the allies.

One of the NATO diplomats said that the countries of the alliance comply with the requirements of the United States and are taking measures to strengthen their own security. At the same time, the discussion of increasing defense spending was overshadowed by disagreements over the topic of Greenland.

According to Politico, NATO representatives are concerned that Trump's harsh rhetoric may persist during the discussion of the future of the American military presence in Europe, support for Ukraine and possible contacts with the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky.

At the same time, former alliance officials believe that Trump's similar style of behavior is no longer a surprise to the allies. According to them, the NATO countries took into account in advance the possibility of a tough position of the American president in the negotiations.
