The expert spoke about ways to protect the garden plot from the Spanish slug.

The Spanish slug is considered one of the most dangerous pests for gardens and vegetable gardens, but it cannot be called completely invulnerable. Although it is almost impossible to get rid of it in one season, regular prevention and an integrated approach can significantly reduce the number of shellfish and protect plants. Igor Yefimkin, director of the Sulange Ornamental Plant nursery, told Izvestia about this on July 7.

According to the expert, the main mistake of summer residents is to start fighting only after the mass appearance of slugs. At this stage, the pests already have time to multiply, and it becomes much more difficult to cope with them. Therefore, it is better to act in advance, using several methods at once, rather than relying on one universal remedy.

The expert recommends that you regularly inspect the site after rain or in the evening, when slugs are most active, and collect them manually. It is equally important to deprive pests of their usual shelters: remove construction debris, old boards, weeds and old mulch. The fewer damp and shaded areas there are, the less attractive it becomes to shellfish.

"Pests often enter the site along with new seedlings, container plants, soil or compost. Sometimes one clutch of eggs is enough for the colony to grow noticeably after a while. Another source of the problem is the neighboring territories with tall grass, abandoned plots and damp thickets, from where slugs gradually move to well—groomed beds. That is why new plants should be carefully examined before planting, and the site should be kept clean," Efimkin explained.

The most favorable conditions for the reproduction of the Spanish slug develop in summer and early autumn, especially in warm and humid weather. At the same time, the expert advises starting plant protection in the spring, when young individuals are much easier to control. In autumn, it is also important not to stop prevention, because it is during this period that adult slugs lay eggs, which safely overwinter and cause a new outbreak of pests in the next season.

According to the expert, it is systemic prevention throughout the year that remains the most effective way to protect the site from the Spanish slug.
