The Day of the Apostles Peter and Paul is celebrated annually on July 12, a great holiday of the Russian Orthodox Church, concluding the Peter Fast. On this day, the first apostles are remembered, whose contribution to Christianity was enormous, and whose death was a martyr's death. About the meaning and traditions of the holiday — in the material of Izvestia.

Peter and Paul Day - 2026: what kind of holiday is it?

Peter and Paul Day in 2026 falls on a Sunday. The holiday is dedicated to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the disciples of Jesus Christ, who played a key role in the spread of Christianity. The writings of the apostles became an important foundation of Christian teaching, and their epistles were included in the New Testament.

The life paths of Peter and Paul are in many ways contrasting: Peter is a simple fisherman who became one of the closest disciples of Christ; Paul is an educated Pharisee who turned from a persecutor of Christians into one of the main preachers of the faith.

The holiday marks the end of the Peter the Great (Apostolic) fast. It begins one week after Holy Trinity Day and lasts until July 11 inclusive. In 2026, it began on June 8th. On Peter and Paul's Day, believers can afford a more generous feast: after lenten restrictions, meat, dairy products, fish, and moderate wine consumption are allowed.

Commemorating both apostles on the same day highlights their equal contribution to the formation of the Church. Both were martyred for their faith in Rome: Peter, considering himself unworthy to die like Christ, was crucified upside down, and Paul, as a Roman citizen, was beheaded.

Why are Peter and Paul called the first apostles

Calling Peter and Paul the first-born, the Church highlights them for their enormous contribution to the spread and establishment of the Christian faith. The exploits and preaching activities of the apostles are described in more detail in the book "Acts of the Apostles". Their ministry became key to the formation of the early Church, including active preaching, miracles performed, and martyrdom.

"We evaluate each person according to the fruits of his activity, and for the formation of the early Christian Church, the Apostles Peter and Paul worked harder than anyone else. If you open the New Testament, which consists of 27 books, you will find that 14 of them belong to the Apostle Paul. Despite the fact that it was written, unconditionally, many times more. Thanks to his work, those communities that were commonly called pagan joined the Church," Vladislav Beregovoy, head of the missionary department of the Pesochen diocese, told Izvestia.

The apostles' paths to ministry were very different. Peter was one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ and witnessed the most important events of His earthly life — the Transfiguration, the Last Supper, and His arrest. Paul was not one of the twelve apostles: he was called after the Resurrection and became an "apostle of the Gentiles." He preached the gospel outside the Jewish world, made several large-scale missionary trips, founded Christian communities, and formulated the foundations of theology in his epistles.

Despite all the differences in origin, education, and time of their vocation, the apostles were united by a profound inner transformation. Peter went from renouncing Christ to a firm profession of faith and repentance, while Paul went from a persecutor of Christians to the most zealous preacher. Both have shown exceptional resilience, dedication, and willingness to suffer for their faith.

"The Apostle Paul devoted his whole life to spreading faith in Christ throughout the world. The Apostle Peter worked no less in this field. Although most of his missionary work took place in Judea, you can find several of the epistles of the Apostle Peter in the New Testament. They are therefore the first—born, because the whole life of these apostles is valuable and important to us," the priest explained.

Who is the Apostle Peter and what miracles are associated with him?

The Apostle Peter (before his vocation, Simon) is one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. In the Christian tradition, he is considered one of the main pillars of the Church. Peter was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. Together with his brother Andrew, Christ called him, giving him the name Peter (translated from Greek — "stone").

Peter was the first of the apostles to call Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God (Matthew 16:16), and it was to him that Christ said: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church" (Matthew 16:18). Peter was also given the "keys of the Kingdom of Heaven": the right to open the way to salvation for people through preaching and the sacraments.

"In one of the conversations with the Apostle Peter, the Savior said that he would give him the keys to the Kingdom of God — this is somehow connected with his confession of Jesus of Nazareth not just as a prophet, but as Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God," Father Vladislav said.

The apostle witnessed the most important events of evangelical history: the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Last Supper, and the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. At the same time, Peter denied Christ three times on the night of His arrest, but after sincere repentance he was forgiven.

"It is very important for us that he agreed to live on with this burden of renunciation. Church tradition has even preserved for us an important episode from the life of the Apostle Peter: every time he heard roosters crowing, he wept bitterly, and over the years tears even appeared on his cheeks. That is, even though he received forgiveness, he still remembered that, even though he promised to be with Christ to the end, no matter what happened to Christ, he still stumbled in a moment of danger," the priest recalled.

According to the priest, this example is especially comforting for people who are experiencing the severity of their own mistakes.

"When you are ready to experience the inevitable, when you have already sunk to the very bottom, into the very darkness in which there is not a ray of hope, but you are ready to bear the consequences of your mistakes and the cross, renunciation and betrayal, and ask God for forgiveness, the Lord bursts into your life with the gift of this forgiveness, with comfort. and the powers that allow you to continue to live, create, enjoy life and perform those feats that you were unable to do," he said.

After the Resurrection of Christ, Peter became one of the main preachers of Christianity and, according to legend, the first bishop of Rome. He was martyred — he was crucified upside down in Rome. The apostle chose this position on the cross himself, because he considered himself unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus.

The main miracles associated with the apostle are described in the Gospels and in the Book of Acts of the Apostles.

The Gospel of Matthew (14:28-31) tells how Peter, at the word of Christ, walked on water. While he believed and looked at the Teacher, he walked, but, being afraid of the wind and waves, he began to drown; Christ immediately stretched out his hand to him and saved him. This miracle is perceived primarily as a lesson about the power of faith and the need not to give in to fear.

The Acts of the Apostles (3:1-10) describes how Peter and John healed a man who had been unable to walk since birth. The apostle said to him, "I have no silver or gold; but what I have, I give it to you: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk." He took him by the hand, and he got up, began to walk, and entered the temple, praising God.

In Joppa, the Apostle Peter resurrected a dead woman named Tabitha (Acts 9:36-42), known for her kindness and helping the poor. This miracle strengthened the faith of the local Christians and attracted many to the new faith.

In Lydda, Peter healed a man named Aeneas, who had been lying in bed for eight years: the apostle said to him: "Aeneas! Jesus Christ is healing you; get up and make your bed" (Acts 9:32-34).

When King Herod Agrippa imprisoned Peter, an angel appeared to him at night, the chains fell, and the apostle was released (Acts 1:16). 12:5–10). This event is perceived as a miraculous deliverance by the will of God.

The Acts of the Apostles (5:15) says that the sick were taken out into the streets in the hope that they would be touched at least by the shadow of Peter passing by, and then they would receive healing. This episode vividly shows how strong people's faith in the grace-giving power of the apostle was.

Who is the Apostle Paul and why is he considered a great preacher

The Apostle Paul (before his conversion, Saul) was one of the key figures of early Christianity, although he was not one of the twelve apostles. He was born in Tarsus (Cilicia), had Roman citizenship, received a good education; by religion he was a Pharisee and at first zealously persecuted Christians.

The turning point was the encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus (described in the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 9): Saul saw a bright light, went blind for three days, and heard the voice of Christ: "Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting Me?" After that, he was baptized, became a preacher, and took the name Paul.

"The Apostle Paul led the persecution of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Jewish religious authorities against those Jews who accepted Christ as their Messiah, and his hands were ankle—deep in blood - he killed all these "sectarians" without mercy and indiscriminately by gender and age. When he was assigned to lead the persecution of Christians in Damascus, he met the real living Christ along the way. And this meeting made a huge change in him," the clergyman noted.

This is what the priest sees as the main consolation for any person.

"The Lord makes even those who have not lived righteously since their youth an instrument of preaching, his mission and spreading Christianity. This means that each of us can be as close to God as anyone, regardless of how you lived before meeting God. Repentance is a great thing. Therefore, this holiday is a celebration of active repentance and the active glory of God, which forgets all the bad things that you have done, and gives you the strength to create and preach the gospel, to bring happiness, joy and good news to people," the priest reminded.

Paul made several long missionary trips to Asia Minor, Greece, and other territories of the Roman Empire, preaching in synagogues and among pagans. He founded many Christian communities and continued to support them with letters even from prison. Paul's life became an example of a missionary feat.

He defended the idea that salvation is available not only to Jews, but also to all nations, without the obligatory observance of Old Testament rites. This position was consolidated at the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem and became a turning point for the transformation of Christianity from a Jewish sect into a world religion.

"The Apostle Paul is depicted with a sword as the guardian of the faith, its defender from heresies and vices. He was a zealous denouncer of any vice that penetrated into the nascent Christian communities, which he organized throughout Asia Minor and Europe. Many of his messages sound harsh: he threatens heavenly punishments to those who, having joined the Christian community, continue to live according to their former sinful habits," the priest said.

Thanks to his education and knowledge of the culture of the Hellenistic world, Paul was able to present the Christian message in a way that was understandable to both Jews and Gentiles. He is traditionally credited with 14 epistles included in the New Testament (for example, the Epistle to the Romans, the Epistle to the Corinthians). In his epistles, Paul revealed the key themes: salvation by faith, the role of grace, the unity of the Church, Christian love, community life. These epistles are still an important part of liturgical reading and the basis of Christian theology.

According to legend, Paul was beheaded in Rome under Emperor Nero (circa 64-67).

Traditions of Peter and Paul Day

For Orthodox believers, Peter and Paul Day is a great holiday that is usually celebrated in the temple. It is celebrated at the end of the Peter's (Apostolic) fast.

On the evening of July 11, a solemn service is held in churches, which prepares believers for the festive day. At the festive liturgy on the morning of July 12, special apostolic and evangelical passages are read, glorifying Peter and Paul, and prayers are offered to the saints.

"The glorification of a particular saint or event begins with an all-night vigil on the eve of the holiday. Therefore, church—bound Christians begin honoring the holiday by attending evening worship on July 11, confession, and then communion at the liturgy," the priest said.

Many Christians try to approach the holiday prepared: they confess and receive communion in order to meet the day in a state of inner peace. On this day, believers turn to the apostles with various prayer requests: for strengthening faith, help in labors, healing, and finding the right path.

"It is in my church that the feast of Peter and Paul is a patronal feast. One of the three thrones of our cathedral was consecrated in honor of the memory of the first apostles. That is why we have a divine liturgy on this day, followed by a solemn prayer service and a procession. In other churches, there may simply be a liturgy, perhaps with a prayer service, but without a procession," Beregovoy explained.

The priest also reminded that Peter's fast ends on the holiday, so believers should have a conversation.

"The only main tradition of this holiday is the completion of a rather long Peter's fast this year. On this day, you can relax and eat any dairy and meat products," he recalled.

In popular culture, Peter's Day was an important milestone in the agricultural calendar and a time of special rituals. By this day, the haymaking was usually completed and preparations for the harvest began. Hence the proverb: "From St. Peter's day — red summer, green mowing."

The Apostle Peter was considered the patron saint of fishermen, so they had their own traditions: in the villages they collected donations to "Peter the Fisherman for a secular candle," which was placed in the temple in front of his icon, and prayed for a rich catch.

After the end of the fast, fast food was served on the table: meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, as well as wine in moderation. Hospitality was considered an important part of the holiday: it was customary to share food with relatives, neighbors and those in need, because they believed that the generosity shown would return a hundredfold.

What can and cannot be done on a holiday

According to Father Vladislav, it is important to attend a divine service on the holiday. If this is not possible, you can replace going to church with home prayer and reading the apostolic epistles.

"It will be great to read all the apostolic letters during the day. Well, God grant that I can at least master a few, because you can't read all 14 epistles of the Apostle Paul in a day, much less comprehend them. Therefore, read at least one epistle of the Apostle Peter, one epistle of the Apostle Paul, read a prayer to them," Father Vladislav recommended.

Among the strict prohibitions of the day are evil words and bad deeds.

"Try not to do any nasty things on this day, as well as on other days of the year. Hurry up to do good," Beregovoy emphasized.

What else can I do:

  • Spend time with your family, avoiding difficult conversations and memories of past grievances;
  • visit lonely elderly relatives, help neighbors, or visit social institutions;
  • arrange a conversation: meat, fish, dairy products and eggs can be on the table, moderate wine consumption is allowed.

What is not recommended to do:

  • Getting married: according to church regulations, the sacrament of marriage is not performed on great holidays (secular weddings are not prohibited);
  • engage in hard physical labor if it distracts from the spiritual component of the holiday.;
  • indulge in gluttony and excessive fun;
  • practice fortune-telling and other superstitions.
