- Russians were told about the connection of the Honey Savior with the beginning of the Dormition Fast
In the Orthodox tradition, Honey Savior is considered not only as a national holiday, but also as an important spiritual point before the beginning of the Dormition Fast, which sets a special rhythm and mood for the entire August church cycle. The dean of the Baltai district of the Saratov diocese, Priest Oleg Zhilyakov, told Izvestia about this.
"Honey Savior marks the beginning of the Dormition Fast, which is established by the Church as preparation for one of the most important holidays of the Orthodox calendar — the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 28," the priest said.
He clarified that unlike Lent, which depends on the day of Easter celebration, Assumption has fixed dates and lasts for two weeks — from August 14 to August 27.
At the same time, the priest adds, in its strictness it is comparable to fasting before the Resurrection of Christ. During this period, believers abstain from animal products: meat, dairy products, eggs and fish.
"Thus, Honey Savior becomes a kind of spiritual frontier, after which believers enter a period of abstinence and prayer concentration," Zhilyakov said.
According to the priest, participation in worship and prayer on this day is of the utmost importance, since they help believers to consciously enter the Dormition fast and live this period correctly.
