Finland allowed temporary closure of the Gulf of Finland due to the threat of UAVs

The Gulf of Finland may be temporarily closed to civilian shipping if necessary to ensure safety in the event of a threat from unmanned aerial vehicles. This was stated on July 6 by Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hyakkanen in an interview with Ilta-Sanomat.

According to the minister, restrictive measures can be introduced promptly.

"The Gulf of Finland is so narrow that the situation can change in a matter of minutes," Hyakkanen said, adding that in case of a threat to airspace, it may be necessary to temporarily close the water area for civilian vessels.

He stressed that such measures are aimed at ensuring security and coordinating actions in case of possible incidents with drones.

The minister also drew a parallel with people's daily habits, noting that, as in the case of the weather forecast, maritime traffic participants now need to follow official warnings about possible restrictions.

Anti-UAV training has been deployed in all military districts of the country.

The governor of the Leningrad Region, Alexander Drozdenko, announced on the same day that 56 drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) had been shot down over the region. According to preliminary data, infrastructure facilities at the Luga training ground, as well as in the areas of the ports of Ust-Luga and Vysotsk, were damaged.
