Ash cloud of the Shiveluch volcano covered the airport and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

An ash cloud from the erupting Shiveluch volcano covered Kamchatka's main airport in Yelizov, as well as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This was reported on July 6 on the website of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Group (KVERT).

"There is an ash cloud over Yelizovo Airport and the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, <... formed as a result of previous ash emissions (up to 12 km above sea level), which began on July 5," the report says.

It is noted that at the moment there are no new ash emissions. Volcanic eruption continues: it is accompanied by powerful combined-cycle gas activity. As indicated on the response team's website, a new lava block continues to grow in the northern part of the lava dome.

According to KVERT, the current activity may pose a threat to international flights and low-flying aircraft.

The press service of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported on July 4 that Shiveluch made an ash release at an altitude of 10.5 km above sea level. The volcano has been assigned the reddest aviation hazard code, ash emissions can reach 12 km.
