- Experts reported an increase in the number of fraudulent calls on behalf of social services
In 2026, attackers began to make calls to citizens over the age of 55 more often under the guise of employees of social services and pension funds. This was announced on July 4 in the MTS Defender service.
According to experts, the share of such calls increased from 13% to 20% over the year.
"The attackers have changed their tactics — if earlier the most common scheme was offers of investments and additional income, now calls are most often made on behalf of employees of pension and social funds," the service's press service told RIA Novosti.
According to analysts, in the first half of the year, calls from government agencies took the second place in popularity with a share of 16%. In third place were offers allegedly from telecom operators, which accounted for 14% of all requests.
The greatest activity of scammers was recorded in March — this month accounted for 20% of the total volume of calls for six months.
Representatives of the Servicepipe cybersecurity laboratory reported on July 3 how scammers use a new method of circumventing two-factor authentication with the selection of one-time SMS codes (OTP). It was clarified that this approach was identified as part of the analysis of a reflected SMS bombing attack that was directed at one of the company's clients.
