- The Lithuanian president allowed the possible disintegration of NATO into two or three parts
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) may break up if the member countries do not meet the established target level of defense spending. This was announced by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on July 3.
"This will split, of course, split the alliance into two or three parts, and this is not very good for the spirit of collective defense in the alliance and for our solidarity," Politico newspaper quoted him as saying.
Nauseda clarified that the situation may be considered controversial if some countries achieve higher spending levels in the coming years, while others remain at about 2-2.5% of GDP.
On June 25, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Sergei Lebedev, said that the West's actions against NATO were turning Europe into a permanent crisis zone. According to him, the old security model, which was based on Euro-Atlantic dominance, is gradually becoming a thing of the past. The CIS Secretary General stressed that Eurasian security should be indivisible, inclusive and multilevel.
