Childhood endocrinologist Julietta Mkrtycheva warned that the smell of acetone from a child's mouth is an alarming sign.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, July 3, the doctor noted that diabetic ketoacidosis, unlike heat stroke, is not always accompanied by high body temperature. According to her, weakness, headache and nausea may resemble symptoms of overheating, but the appearance of acetone odor from the mouth, extreme thirst and shortness of breath at rest indicates the development of ketoacidosis and requires immediate hospitalization.

Mkrtycheva emphasized that the glucose meter remains the main assistant for parents, therefore, in case of any deterioration in the child's well-being, it is necessary first of all to measure the blood sugar level. She explained that diabetes control is complicated by several factors in the heat: dehydration leads to an increase in glucose levels, high physical activity combined with a decrease in appetite can cause it to drop, and improper storage of insulin worsens the properties of the drug and causes sugar spikes.

The doctor also reminded that in summer, a child with diabetes should always have a bottle of water, a thermopenal with insulin, fast carbohydrates (juice or glucose), a charged phone with a monitoring system and test strips. She added that when exposed to direct sunlight, insulin can lose its properties and crystallize, so you need to use a thermos bag to store it.

On the same day, Galina Strakhova, associate Professor of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Development at Pirogov University, told Izvestia that diabetes had become "younger" in Russia over the past 10 years.: Russians under the age of 35 began to be diagnosed twice as often. At the same time, the detection rate of the disease in young people is only 20%.

At the same time, nutritionist Mariyat Mukhina told NSN that even baby fruit puree "without sugar" can harm a child and become a factor in the development of diabetes. This puree is refined: it increases the concentration of glucose in the blood as quickly as possible.

In June, doctor Olga Tarasova in an interview with the website kp.ru She warned that breakfast cereals, such as glazed cereals and instant porridges, can negatively affect a child's intestinal microbiome. The doctor emphasizes that whole grains contain probiotic complexes that are beneficial to the intestines, unlike "refined" instant cereals, which are devoid of many useful layers. 360.ru .

Also in June, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported that the Russian government would allocate almost 5 billion rubles to provide children, adolescents and pregnant women with diabetes with portable continuous glucose monitoring systems. Prescriptions for them will be prescribed by endocrinologists, RT clarifies.
