In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of July 6 and the church holidays that fall on this day.

Folk signs for July 6th

The national holiday on July 6 is known as Agrafena Kupalnitsa. It fell on the eve of Ivan Kupala and was associated with water, baths, medicinal herbs and the beginning of a large summer ritual cycle. The name of the day is associated with the name of the holy Martyr Agrippina of Rome, who was called Agrafena in the folk tradition. In the old days, it was believed that by this time the water in rivers and lakes was safe for swimming, and the herbs were gaining special strength.

On this day, baths were heated in the villages, brooms were harvested, herbs were collected and preparations were made for Kupala night. Women and girls went to buy medicinal plants, which were then dried and stored for household needs. They tried to knit brooms specifically for Agrafena, because they believed that such a billet would help preserve health for the whole year. In some regions, trial mowing was started, turnips were sown and the condition of the crops was monitored.

A separate place was occupied by weather signs. Based on the behavior of birds, insects, plants, and pets, they tried to understand what the weather would be like in the coming days and what the harvest would be like. For example, if the ducks stayed in the middle of the river, they expected hot weather.

Other signs of the day:

  • Birds bathe in dust — to rain;
  • ducks swim in the middle of the river — for hot weather;
  • Flowers tend to the ground — to drought;
  • rainbows last a long time after rain — in wet weather.

What not to do on July 6th

There were prohibitions and superstitions about the Agrafena Bathing Suit, primarily related to water, home and relationships between people. It was believed that cleanliness should not be neglected on this day, so the refusal of a bath or bathing was perceived as a bad omen. They were also afraid of quarrels, envy and malicious words, because on the eve of Kupala night, any conflicts, according to legend, could become entrenched in the family's life for a long time. It was forbidden to go to reservoirs alone at night: water was considered a strong element requiring caution. It was not recommended to leave the house unprotected, so thorny grasses could be laid out at the windows and thresholds.

What else can not be done on July 6:

  • leaving the threshold unprotected leads to troubles and diseases;
  • picking up a found dead bird leads to a quarrel with a loved one;
  • to be lazy and postpone household chores is for a poor year;
  • Holding grudges and resentments leads to illnesses and family troubles;

What is the church holiday on July 6th?

On July 6, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Agrippina of Rome. On the same day, the celebration of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated, established in memory of the salvation of Moscow from the invasion of Khan Akhmat in 1480.

Saint Agrippina lived in Rome in the 3rd century. According to the hagiography, in her youth she renounced marriage in order to devote herself to the service of God. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian, the girl openly confessed her faith, for which she was severely tortured. After her death, her body was taken by the pious virgins Vassa, Paul and Agathonika, who transferred the relics of the saint to Sicily.

Also on this day, the Orthodox Church remembers the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, which is considered one of the most revered Orthodox shrines. According to church tradition, the image is associated with the name of the Evangelist Luke, and he came to Russia from Byzantium. The icon received special significance after it was transferred to Vladimir, from where its name came from. Later, the shrine began to be perceived as the defender of Moscow and the entire Russian land. It was associated with getting rid of invasions and helping in difficult historical periods.

The celebration on July 6 is set in memory of the events of 1480, when Khan Akhmat approached the Russian lands, but did not cross the Ugra River. In the church tradition, this event is associated with the intercession of the Mother of God through her Vladimir image.

"To whom shall we cry, O Lady? To whom shall we turn in our sorrow, if not to You, O Queen of Heaven? Who will receive our weeping and sighing, if not You, O Immaculate One, the hope of Christians and the refuge of us sinners? Who's more in Your favor? Incline thine ear to us, O Lady, Mother of our God, and do not despise those who demand Thy help: hear our groaning, strengthen us sinners, give understanding and teach us, O Queen of Heaven, and do not depart from us, O Thy servant, O Lady, for our murmurings, but be our Mother and Intercessor, and deliver us over to the merciful the protection of Your Son. Arrange for us as it pleases Your holiest will, and lead us sinners to a quiet and serene life, so that we may weep for our sins, so that we may rejoice with You always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
