"Representatives of the participants and the Supervisory Board of DFB GmbH & Co. KG today unanimously accepted the proposal <...> about the immediate termination of the employment contract with the head coach of the national team Julian Nagelsmann," reads a release on the union's website.

Football insider Fabrizio Romano reported on the coach's dismissal on the same day. The DFB explained that Nagelsmann himself had asked for his resignation the day before, on July 2. He cited Germany's unsuccessful performance at the 2026 World Cup as the reason: the national team was eliminated from the 1/16 finals of the World Cup, losing to Paraguay on penalties. The German Football Union granted Nagelsmann's request.

The president of the football organization, Bernd Neuendorf, thanked the specialist for his work, noting his dedication, professionalism and responsible attitude.

Nagelsmann himself said that the decision was not easy for him. According to him, after the disappointing result at the 2026 World Cup, the national team "deserves a chance for a new beginning without the burden of the past." He also thanked the players, the coaching staff, the staff of the union and the fans for their support. Along with Nagelsmann, his assistants will also leave the team.

The DFB also reported that the management intends to start negotiations with Jurgen Klopp on the appointment of head coach. According to the union, the specialist has already expressed his "principled readiness" to lead the German national team.

Nagelsmann is 38 years old. He took over the German national team in September 2023. The specialist replaced Hans-Dieter Flick in this position. Prior to his appointment, Nagelsmann coached FC Bayern and RB Leipzig. In the 21/22 season, together with Munich, he won the national championship (Bundesliga), twice won the German Super Cup. In 2017, Nagelsmann was recognized in his homeland as the best coach of the year.

Klopp is 59 years old. He is considered one of the best football coaches in the world. During his career, he became German champion twice with Borussia, won the Cup and the Super Cup of the country. With Liverpool, he became the champion of the English Premier League in the 19/20 season, won the Champions League and twice reached the finals of the main European cup. He was the coach of the year according to the International Federation of Football Associations in 2019 and 2020.

On June 29, the national team of Paraguay defeated Germany in the 1/16 finals of the 2026 World Cup. The main and extra time of the match ended with a score of 1:1. As part of the South American team, Julio Enciso scored in the 42nd minute. This goal was the first for the national team of Paraguay during the team's participation in the playoffs. German striker Kai Havertz equalized the score in the 54th minute. In the penalty shootout, the Paraguayans were more accurate (4:3). In the South American republic, a day off was announced after the match.
