The body's need for protein varies throughout life. Anastasia Lebedeva, Associate Professor of the Department of Dietetics at ROSBIOTECH University, told Izvestia about this. She noted that the minimum requirement for this substance is about 0.8 g per 1 kg of body weight. The optimal amount for muscle maintenance is 1-1.5 g.

"According to the recommendations of experts, children from 1 to 3 years old need about 13-15% of the caloric content of the diet, adolescents — 1-1.2 g per 1 kg of body weight, and adults with low activity — 0.8–1 g and up to 1.5–2 g during active strength training. For the elderly, the norm increases to 1-1.2 g per 1 kg to prevent loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia)," explained the interlocutor of the editorial board.

At the same time, when eating protein foods, it is important to avoid a deficiency of other vital nutrients — fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins and healthy fats, the specialist emphasized. According to the nutritionist, proteins should make up 10-35% of the total caloric content, fats — 20-35%, and carbohydrates — 45-65%.
