Mehr announces arrival of Ali Khamenei's remains in Tehran

The remains of Iran's former supreme leader Ali Khamenei have been taken to the Musalla religious complex in Tehran. This was reported by the Mehr news agency on July 3.

"The leader's body, along with the bodies of his associates, was transported to Tehran's Musalla early on Friday morning and placed in the main prayer hall before a two—day public farewell ceremony," the website said.

The agency published footage showing people gathered at the pavilion raising their hands and passing a coffin in the colors of the Iranian flag over their heads. It is noted that more than 20 million people are expected to participate in the nationwide funeral ceremony.

Representatives of more than 30 countries, including Russia, China, Pakistan, India, Georgia and Cuba arrived in Iran to participate in the funeral ceremonies. At the same time, religious scholars and cultural figures from Indonesia and Afghanistan were among the first foreign guests who paid tribute to the memory of the former Iranian leader.

Ali Khamenei died at the age of 86 on February 28 as a result of a military operation by the United States and Israel in Iran. Mojtaba Khamenei, Khamenei's son, was appointed the new supreme leader of Iran on March 9.

The day before, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev would represent Russia at the farewell ceremony with Khamenei.

Khamenei's farewell and funeral will be held from July 4 to July 9. The main funeral ceremony is scheduled for July 6 in Tehran. The next day, on July 7, mourning events will continue in the Shiite holy city of Qom, and the final ceremony will take place on July 9 in Mashhad.
