A testing ground for self-driving cars will be opened in Sirius

With the support of the Moscow government, it is planned to launch a testing ground and certification support for unmanned vehicles on the federal territory of Sirius by 2030. This was announced by the Moscow Department of Transport on July 2 in its Telegram channel.

Based on the existing infrastructure of the Sirius Innovation Center, it is planned to enable high-tech companies to design, test and improve unmanned vehicles. It is noted that the site will allow the creation of equipment for work on land, in water and in the air.

There should be a training system for operators, test engineers and other specialized specialists who can later become part of the Moscow Transport team. One of the advantages of the landfill's location is the mild weather and different geographical conditions, which will make it possible to improve unmanned vehicles all year round.

Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, noted that multi-stage testing of unmanned vehicles in real-world conditions in a megalopolis will help to integrate and scale best practices in large Russian cities faster.

In two years, unmanned vehicles are planned to be released on all highways of the country.

In January, the Russian Ministry of Transport developed a draft federal law that defines the conditions for the admission of highly automated vehicles (VATS) to highways and tramways across the country. If adopted, it will enter into force on September 1, 2027. It is expected that the widespread use of self-driving cars in the Russian Federation will increase the speed of cargo delivery by 30%, reduce the risk of accidents by 20%, and reduce fuel and component costs.

In 2026, unmanned taxis are planned to be launched in new areas of Moscow. The service with unmanned taxis is currently being tested in Moscow, Innopolis and the federal territory of Sirius.
