The European Commission (EC) will announce plans to introduce pan-European age restrictions on the use of social networks in early autumn this year. This was reported on July 2 by the Euractiv portal, citing sources.

According to numerous representatives of the European Union (EU) and diplomats, EC President Ursula von der Leyen will announce the proposals during her annual address to the EU in Strasbourg on September 16. However, the sources clarified that there is no understanding yet as to which proposals will be outlined at this meeting and what age threshold will be set.

This step will be the most concrete political statement by Brussels on the introduction of union-wide age restrictions on the use of social networks after several months of pressure from the governments of EU member states to strengthen the protection of children on the Internet, the authors of the article emphasize.

It is noted that the ban on social networks for children and teenagers has become one of the main global trends in the field of digital security in recent months. Countries around the world are debating bills restricting the use of online platforms under the pretext of protecting minors from the harmful effects of content, addiction, cyberbullying, and mental health problems.
