Virologist Vikulov called the Hong Kong flu not the most aggressive of all strains.
The influenza A(H3N2) virus, which is also called "Hong Kong", is far from the most aggressive of all strains. On July 1, Georgy Vikulov, director of the Scientific Information Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Viral Infections, told Izvestia.
Earlier, the media reported that dozens of Russian tourists reported being infected with the "Hong Kong" flu on Bali and compared the severity of the disease with COVID-19.
Vikulov stressed that such analogies are incorrect. He noted that A(H3N2) can be severe, but there is no evidence in the scientific community that it is the most aggressive strain.
"In a way, the concern about the Hong Kong flu is due to the fact that this variant already caused a pandemic in the late 60s. But there are other types of flu that are no less dangerous. If we are talking about the most dangerous and deadly, then these are avian influenza viruses. Human mortality there reaches 50-60%," the virologist added.
He explained that influenza infections, contrary to popular misconception, do not spread in the cold, but year-round. Among the preventive measures, Vikulov highlighted preventive vaccination, post-exposure administration of antiviral drugs prescribed by the attending physician, as well as non-medicinal methods.
"These are the use of personal protective equipment, the use of antiseptics, and the elimination of microdeficiencies. Ventilation of rooms, proper humidity, ambient temperature, and avoiding contact with a sick person," Vikulov concluded.
Elena Malinnikova, MD, infectious diseases specialist, virologist, reported on January 5 that the Hong Kong flu can lead to serious consequences for people with chronic lung diseases, children, pregnant women and people with immunodeficiency. She added that temporary immunodeficiency conditions can aggravate the course of the Hong Kong flu, which makes it especially important to pay attention to prevention and timely medical care for the at-risk group.
