In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of July 2 and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for July 2

In Russia, on July 2, the day of Zosima the Bee was celebrated. The holiday was named after Saint Zosima, who was considered the patron saint of bees and beekeepers in Russia. During this period, bees actively collected nectar, and the hives were filled with honey, so the day was considered important for assessing the future harvest.

On the holiday, beekeepers inspected the hives and checked the condition of the honeycombs. In some regions, rituals were held for good honey collection and protection of the apiary. The beehives were sprinkled with holy water, prayers were read and they walked around them with a lighted Easter candle, asking for protection for their winged workers. It was also customary to treat loved ones with honey and thank nature for her gifts.

There are many weather signs associated with Zosima Bee. If the bees were actively flying in the early morning, it foreshadowed warm, clear weather. If the insects did not leave the hive, rain and cold weather were expected. People used to say: "The bee went early — it will be a fine day" and "It will rain on the winter — for prolonged bad weather."

Other signs of the day:

  • bees settle on the walls of the hive — to intense heat;
  • bees have become angrier, they sting more often — before the drought;
  • Thunder rumbles — to the lingering rains;
  • The wind is picking up, leading to a change in the weather;
  • dew is plentiful in the morning — the day will be warm.

What not to do on July 2nd

There were also special prohibitions on the holiday. It was believed that bees should not be disturbed on this day for no reason, so as not to disrupt their work. People tried to behave quietly and calmly, so as not to scare off insects and cause trouble. They also avoided noise and sudden movements near the apiary.

What else can't be done on July 2nd:

  • offending and even more so killing bees leads to trouble and illness;
  • destroying insect nests leads to losses;
  • count the bees — they will start to get sick and die;
  • being lazy leads to a loss of wealth;
  • quarreling and getting angry can lead to business failures.

What is the church holiday on July 2nd?

On July 2, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Great Martyr Zosima of Apollonia and St. Paisius the Great. These saints became famous for their faith, perseverance, and spiritual achievement. Their church veneration dates back to the first centuries of Christianity, and their lives are recorded in ancient hagiographic sources.

The martyr Zosima lived in the second century in the city of Apollonia of Thrace. He was a warrior who openly professed Christianity. For this, he was subjected to severe tortures, demanding that he renounce his faith. However, Zosima remained adamant, continuing to testify about Christ, and was executed.

Saint Paisius the Great lived in the fourth and fifth centuries and was one of the famous Egyptian ascetics. He led a strict ascetic life, devoting himself to prayer and solitude. According to legend, Paisius possessed the gift of foresight and healing. People came to him for advice and support. His life became a model of monastic asceticism and service to God.

Prayers on July 2

On July 2, Orthodox believers pray to the Martyr Zosima of Apollonia and St. Paisius the Great. They are asked for strengthening in faith, healing from diseases and help in difficult life situations.

Prayer to Zosima of Apolloniades

"O holy Martyr of Christ Zosimo, valiant soldier of the Heavenly King, who through thy patience and courage hast shamed the devil and crowned with the incorruptible crown of the Lord! Look mercifully upon us sinners who seek refuge in you, and ask the All—merciful God for our sins to be forgiven, fortified in faith, patient in tribulation and adversity, and above all, for protection from all evil and the machinations of the enemy. Help the soldiers and all those in danger, grant them courage and strength, and protect them with the protection of your prayers. Do not stop praying for all who call on your holy name with faith, so that through your prayers we may be worthy of the Kingdom of heaven, and together with you we may glorify the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen to that."

Prayer to Paisius the Great

"To the passions of the conqueror, to the souls of the helper, <...> we fervently and fervently pray to you, Reverend Father! Hearken and help us, do not reject or despise us, but hear this in the humility of the hearts of those who flow to you. You, Venerable One, have diligently striven for the salvation of your neighbors, and you have brought many sinners to the light of salvation. <...> Hear us, O Most laudable One, for we are unworthy to pray for the gift of the Lord's great mercy, for we are sinners, and we have defiled lips and burdened hearts, and we suffer under the burden of transgressions, and prayer does not reach us. Ours is before the Lord. For this reason, pray for us with your strong and God-pleasing supplication, Holy Paisius, that our relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances who died without repentance may be delivered from eternal torment, and our Savior will receive your prayer with good pleasure and give them His mercy instead of their good deeds, freeing them, we believe, from suffering and inhabiting the villages of the righteous. And He will honor us to die in repentance, so that we may together glorify the All-holy and magnificent name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen to that."
