Reuters has learned about Germany's demand to cut the EU budget by 400 billion euros.

Germany demanded to reduce the budget of the European Union (EU) proposed by the European Commission (EC) for 2028-2034 by 400 billion euros, calling it unbearable. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on June 30, citing an internal government document.

Germany is demanding cuts in the budget proposed by the European Commission for 2028-2034 in the amount of €2 trillion ($456 billion), warning that current plans are "unsustainable," the publication says.

According to the agency, Berlin believes that it is impossible to coordinate the project in its current form. Even after a 400 billion euro reduction, the government estimates that the budget will remain 27% larger than the current one, and Germany's annual contribution will exceed 50 billion euros.

As noted by Reuters, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on EU countries to agree on a budget this year to ensure certainty before it comes into force in January 2028 against the backdrop of upcoming elections in France, Poland and Italy.
