The Ministry of Transport has begun to develop new rules for setting speed limits.

The Ministry of Transport of Russia, together with relevant departments, is developing methodological recommendations that will prescribe a new individual approach to setting and correcting speed limits on roads. Their adoption is scheduled for 2027, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports, citing the agency.

The recommendations will include provisions for determining and changing optimal speed limits. It is planned that they will take into account the actual traffic intensity, the quality of the road infrastructure and the features of the surrounding areas, for example, residential buildings, schools or shopping malls. The document is intended as a recommendation.

According to Rafael Mardanshin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Transport and Development of Transport Infrastructure, the speed of movement should be increased where the situation allows, as the quality of roads improves, and cars become more technologically advanced and reliable. He drew attention to the fact that on good sections of roads, a ragged driving mode is often created due to speed limits.

Earlier, on May 20, it was reported that in Moscow in the four months of 2026, the number of cases exceeding the speed limit from 60 km/h and above decreased by 24% compared to the same period last year.
