- The average term of a car loan in the Russian Federation has reached its maximum in two years
In May 2026, the average loan term for new and used cars reached its maximum value since the beginning of 2024. This was announced on June 29 by the National Bureau of Credit Histories (NBKI).
According to him, the average term of a car loan in late spring was 5.97 years, an increase of 17.5% compared to the same period last year (5.08 years in May 2025), and 2.6% compared to the previous month (5.82 years in April 2026).
The highest average term of car loans issued was recorded in the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, the Volgograd Region, the Perm Region and the Rostov Region (from 6.65 to 6.3 years). The lowest rate was recorded in Moscow (5.29 years), St. Petersburg (5.45 years) and the Moscow region (5.46 years).
The most significant growth dynamics are in the Samara Region (+26.5%), the Chuvash Republic (+25.8%), the Nizhny Novgorod Region (+24.9%), the Stavropol Territory (+23.2%) and the Ulyanovsk Region (+23.2%).
According to Alexey Volkov, NBKI's Marketing Director, the increase in car loan terms allows banks to control borrowers' debt burden (no higher than 50%) by reducing the monthly payment amount.
In May, Russia issued 84.9 thousand car loans for new and used cars, which is 4.4% less than in April of the same year. At the same time, compared to the same period last year, the number of car loans issued in May increased by 3.3% (in May 2025, the figure was 82.2 thousand units).
