- Bloomberg pointed to the economic consequences of the withdrawal of US troops from Germany
The threat of the withdrawal of American troops from Germany, where about 37,000 US soldiers are currently permanently stationed, creates acute uncertainty for the host cities and has already led to a decrease in demand for housing in the home areas. This was reported by Bloomberg on June 27.
"The withdrawal of troops will be a dramatic blow to the entire economic and social life," said Thorsten Gredler, mayor of the Bavarian town of Wilseck.
A regiment of almost 5,000 soldiers is stationed in Wilseck, a small town in northern Bavaria with a population of 6.5 thousand people. In total, about 30 thousand Americans live in the region, including military families. According to the mayor, with the withdrawal of troops, more than a third of them may leave the region.
The annual economic contribution of the garrison to the municipality ranges from 650 million euros to 700 million euros. A study by the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) showed that with the withdrawal of 200,000 soldiers in the 1990s, municipal revenues decreased by an average of 9%, and negative effects on employment and finances persist to this day.
In the large city of Wiesbaden, where about 23,000 Americans (military personnel, civilian personnel and families) are concentrated, the authorities are already developing plans to convert the vacated facilities into housing and commercial real estate. A final decision on the review of the US presence in Europe is expected by the end of the year after the completion of the review by Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth, the article notes.
The Reuters news agency reported on May 26 that the United States is considering significantly reducing its military contribution to NATO. According to the newspaper, a closed briefing was held at NATO headquarters last week, at which Washington representatives announced plans to reduce the provision of key military capabilities. We are talking, in particular, about fighter jets, warships, drones and tanker planes.
The Financial Times newspaper reported on May 20 that EU countries are expressing irritation over the uncertainty over the withdrawal of American troops from the continent and plan to demand clarification of the situation from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to the newspaper, Washington's current decisions on the withdrawal of some military personnel from Germany, as well as the suspension of sending military personnel to Poland, have provoked serious concern among European partners.
