Folk signs for June 29: what can and cannot be done

In Russia, folk signs and beliefs formed a whole system of life guidelines, which were treated with respect. They were used to judge when it was time to take up the plow, when to harvest fruits, on which day it was better to have a wedding, and when it was worth postponing a long journey. In the national calendar, 29 is known as Tikhon Tichy, because, according to the observations of the ancestors, on this day nature seemed to freeze. On the holiday, feasts were held for farmers, the whole community weeded the beds, cleaned the yard, and put the household in order.

The housewives had their own rituals: they diligently "shook out" all the bad things from bedding and clothes — laziness, illness, heavy thoughts, and then hung things in the sun so that they would be nourished with strength and restore cheerfulness to the household. There was also a special ceremony for children: the mother put a clean white shirt on the baby, led him to the water and washed him three times, then rinsed the shirt and put it on the child again, allowing it to dry right on the body — so, according to legend, all the troubles were washed away. Another important tradition was the gathering of herbs: It was believed that it was on June 29 that medicinal plants gained special power.

Tikhon's Day in the national consciousness was a period of fragility of home comfort and peace, so people tried to protect silence and harmony. What is the church holiday on June 29th?

On June 29, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Tikhon of Amafunt, who lived in Cyprus in the IV–V centuries and became famous for miracles in his youth. Through his prayer, the empty barn was filled with wheat, and the withered vines bore fruit again. After becoming bishop of Amafunt, he zealously fought against paganism, destroying temples, and at the same time always showed mercy, helping everyone who needed support. The saint died in 425, knowing in advance about the time of his death.

Also on this day, June 29, they remember St. Tikhon of Medyn, a Kaluga ascetic of the XV century, who founded Tikhonov Monastery near Kaluga. After starting his monastic life at the Chudov Monastery in Moscow, he eventually chose the path of hermitage and went into the deep forests near Kaluga. His cell was the hollow of a huge oak tree, which stood for almost four centuries after the saint's death. The monk died in 1492 at a very old age, having accepted the great schema shortly before his death. Even today, believers celebrate cases of miraculous healings associated with his relics.

In addition, on June 29, the transfer of the relics of St. Theophan the Recluse of Vyshensky, an outstanding Russian theologian, preacher and spiritual writer, is celebrated. After graduating from the Kiev Theological Academy, he became a monk in 1841, taught at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, then was sent to Jerusalem, where he studied the holy places and the works of the Church fathers. Later, he became rector of the seminary and academy, and in 1859, Bishop of Tambov. In 1866, he retired to the Vyshenskaya Hermitage, where he devoted himself to prayer and writing theological works: interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, translations of the holy fathers, and instructions in letters.
