Former First Lady of South Korea sentenced to an additional seven years for bribery
The wife of former South Korean President Kim Gong-hee, accused of selling official positions and receiving expensive gifts, was sentenced to an additional seven years in prison. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency on June 26.
"The court found Ms. Kim guilty on all counts, including receiving funds and valuables worth about 300 million won in exchange for mediation in various cases," the publication says.
The court also ordered the confiscation of valuable items from the convict, including a painting by artist Li Ufang and a golden turtle. In addition, the court decided to collect 64.8 million won from her.
Kim Gong-hee was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison on January 28 in a corruption case. The woman was charged on three counts, but the court found the defendant innocent on two of them. In particular, the special prosecutor accused Kim Gong-hee of manipulating the value of the car dealer's securities.
On February 19, a court in South Korea sentenced Yoon Seok-young to life imprisonment. The former head of state was found guilty of leading the rebellion in 2024. According to the prosecution, he conspired with former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and others to organize riots and undermine the constitution. The former defense minister was sentenced to 30 years in prison on the same day.
Yoon Seok-young was arrested on January 15, 2025 in a corruption case, which was an unprecedented case when investigative authorities detained a person who ruled the state. Later, the president was taken into custody, which caused discontent among his supporters, who staged pogroms in the country.
