When gasoline is stored in a canister in a conventional garage, the fuel gradually loses light fractions and oxidizes. The proportion of resinous compounds in it is growing, it evaporates and ignites worse, and also contributes more actively to carbon formation in the combustion chamber. This was told by Sergey Ponomarev, technical coach of the training center of the international network of Fit Service car services.

"In a metal or high-quality special plastic fuel canister, standing in the shade at a moderate temperature, gasoline can be considered normal for about three to six months. Then the gradual deterioration of the properties begins," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quoted Ponomarev as saying on June 25.

If the shelf life of gasoline in a canister is approaching a year, then the contents should be used as carefully as possible, and if possible, mix it with fresh gasoline, and not just pour it as it is into a modern turbo engine or a direct injection unit. For such engines, the use of obsolete fuel leads to an increased risk of detonation, deposits on injectors and valves, unstable idling and errors in the composition of the mixture, the expert warned.

At the same time, as the expert noted, an old naturally aspirated engine with a low compression ratio and simple distributed injection in most cases will forgive half-year-old gasoline without drastic consequences.

On the eve of the vice-president of the National Union of Motorists, Jan Haitser, told how driving style can help save fuel. He noted that efficiency needs to be learned from truckers — they drive evenly, drive at a cruising speed and try to slow down minimally.
