Rare anomalies in the development of the dental system can go unnoticed for years and disguise themselves as diseases of the ENT organs. One of these pathologies is tooth ectopia, a condition in which the dental bud develops outside of its usual position and may even end up in the nasal cavity or maxillary sinus. According to Emeline Shevchuk, Director of Digital Diagnostics and Clinical Support at EUROKAPPA, such cases are extremely rare, but they are well known to medical science.
"Most often, over-complete teeth or displaced incisors and canines are found in the nasal cavity. The nose and upper jaw are located very close to each other, they are separated only by a thin bone plate, so in rare cases, the dental rudiment can migrate to an atypical area," the expert explained.
The specialist noted that most often such an anomaly is formed at the stage of intrauterine development. Among the possible risk factors, doctors name a genetic predisposition, disorders in the formation of the maxillofacial skeleton, past inflammatory processes and injuries at an early age.
Prolonged exposure of a tooth in the nasal cavity is fraught with serious health complications. This can lead to chronic sinusitis, bone destruction, and ophthalmic problems such as involvement of the eye socket and tear duct. In addition, constant oral breathing in adolescents negatively affects the quality of sleep, the formation of the nervous system and academic performance.
How not to miss the anomaly
Valeria Kazakova, an otolaryngologist at Invitro, added that the main difficulty lies in the similarity of symptoms with more common diseases. According to her, an ectopic tooth can manifest as unilateral nasal congestion, unpleasant discharge, frequent sinusitis, headaches and facial pain. Sometimes patients have been treating a chronic runny nose or sinusitis for years, unaware of the true cause of the problem.
"The main insidiousness of pathology is that standard treatment often does not have a lasting effect, and symptoms regularly return," the specialist noted.
Doctors recommend using modern imaging techniques to identify such anomalies. The most informative study is considered to be cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
"CBT allows you to obtain a three—dimensional image of all dental rudiments, determine their exact location and evaluate their interaction with surrounding anatomical structures," Shevchuk emphasized.
Experts recommend regular dental checkups during adolescence, when wisdom teeth and the maxillofacial system are actively forming. According to doctors, timely diagnosis makes it possible to identify rare abnormalities at an early stage and avoid the development of serious complications.
