Before a long car trip, it is necessary to prepare the vehicle in advance, check the route and ensure traffic safety. Pavel Borodin, director of projects at Casco Savings Insurance, told Izvestia on June 28.

Car preparation

A long trip puts an increased load on the car, so the expert recommends a complete diagnosis of the engine, suspension, brakes and cooling system. Special attention should be paid to the battery and air conditioner, as the heat in the cabin reduces the driver's concentration.

Before departure, it is necessary to check the condition of the tires and set the pressure in them, taking into account the full load of the trunk. Borodin noted the importance of an integrated approach to the technical condition of the vehicle.

"Go on the road only when you are sure of the technical condition of the car, the availability of all necessary documents and readiness for any eventuality," Borodin stressed.

Route planning

Drivers are advised not to rely solely on navigators, which can navigate through broken or repaired areas. It is more reliable to choose federal highways where infrastructure is developed, and download offline maps in advance in case of loss of communication.

To ensure safety, it is important to observe a rest regime, making stops every two to three hours. The most dangerous time is considered to be the period from two to five o'clock in the morning because of the high risk of falling asleep at the wheel. If the journey is long, experts recommend planning an overnight stay at the hotel in advance.

Necessary things

The mandatory travel kit must include a pump, a cable, wires for starting the engine and a lamp. Luggage should be distributed evenly, placing heavy objects closer to the center of the trunk, and leaving only basic necessities and original documents in the cabin.

In addition to CTP, travelers are advised to apply for a hard hat to protect against theft or natural disasters, as well as medical insurance when traveling abroad. Pavel Borodin reminded that the usual policy does not cover all risks.

"CTP covers liability to other road users, but does not compensate for damage to your own car, so when traveling for long periods, it is recommended to think in advance about protection from other possible risks," Borodin explained.
