In July, Russian cosmonauts will conduct experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) to breed the 24th and 25th generations of fruit flies, whose ancestors were born in space. This was announced on June 25 by the head of the Laboratory of Cell Biophysics at the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP). WOUNDED Irina Ogneva.
"There will be two series of experiments — with a line that is flying for the first time, and with a line that has already had several flights — generation 24-25 for this line. The return is on July 26," Ogneva told RIA Novosti.
It is specified that the new insects for the Cytomechanarium experiment will be delivered to the International Space Station by the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft, which is scheduled to launch on July 14.
The first two generations of flies were bred in early April 2025. The larvae were delivered on the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft on April 8 as part of the 73rd expedition, and then returned on the Soyuz MS-26 on April 20. The seventh generation of descendants of space insects was sent on a flight on the Bion-M biosatellite No. 2 in the period from August 20 to September 19, 2025, where the 9th and 10th generations appeared.

Researchers experimenting with E. coli and T7 bacteriophages have found that life in space changes the way bacteria and viruses interact with each other. Experts have noticed a holistic deceleration of infections and the evolution of both forms in zero gravity, which is characteristically different from the process on Earth.
