The surgeon named the main breast changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy and breastfeeding often lead to noticeable breast changes. However, it is incorrect to claim that after lactation, the breast necessarily "disappears". Maxim Usungwan, a plastic surgeon and oncologist, told Izvestia about this on June 27.

According to him, during pregnancy, the breast increases under the influence of hormones, the skin stretches, and after lactation, the tissues gradually return to their original state, but the shape may change.

"Most often, women experience a loss of breast fullness, especially in the upper part, a decrease in tissue elasticity and the appearance of signs of ptosis — breast prolapse. In addition, the size of the areola may increase and the position of the nipple-areolar complex may change. Such changes become more noticeable after several pregnancies, but there is no universal scenario," explained Usungwan.

He noted that the severity of the changes depends on genetics, skin quality, tissue volume, weight fluctuations and the number of pregnancies.

"In practice, there are often women who, after the birth of two or three children, retain a beautiful breast shape without surgical correction. At the same time, in some patients, pronounced changes appear after the first pregnancy," the surgeon added.

As the specialist emphasized, if the breast loses its shape, plastic surgery offers several correction options: a lift without implants, the installation of implants or lipofilling. The surgeon also noted that even with implants installed, the surrounding tissues may change over time, so the shape of the breast may change under the influence of age, pregnancy and weight.
