Medvedev pointed to the unsubstantiated accusations of the ECHR against Russia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) stigmatizes Russia without any evidence, but does not see the Russophobic policies of a number of countries, as well as the ban on the Russian language in Ukraine. This was announced on June 24 by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

"He (the ECHR. — Ed.), without any evidence, stigmatizes Russia for allegedly discriminating against Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars on the territory of Crimea. On the other hand, he does not see discrimination in the openly Russophobic policy of the Latvian authorities," Medvedev said during a speech at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPIEF).

At the same time, he noted that today each state should develop its own legal system based on social, historical and cultural characteristics, so that it serves the interests of society. However, now the West reserves the monopoly right to decide which country meets the standards and which does not, following the well—known principle: "everything is for friends, and the law is for enemies." Medvedev stressed that Moscow is ready to fight for genuine international equality with a complete rejection of neocolonial practices.

"The absolute global majority lives outside the western camp — more than 80% of the world's population. This is a colossal palette of cultures, traditions, and historical experience, and our main task is to use international law as a tool that will turn this indisputable arithmetic majority into real, sovereign, and protected centers of power in a multipolar world," concluded the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

He excluded the mention of the European Convention on Human Rights from his acts.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recalled on March 31 that Russia does not recognize the ECHR's decisions, so the conclusions of the court on the case of historian Yuri Dmitriev do not matter. The Memorial movement (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) reported in 2021 that Dmitriev, who was sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony in Russia in a pedophilia case, had filed a complaint against the verdict with the ECHR.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Chairman of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin in December last year, pointed to the politicization of European justice and the ECHR. He also stressed that the hostile attitude of the West has created difficult conditions for Russia, which is reflected in some decisions of the Constitutional Court related to restrictive measures.
