The Ministry of Justice announced the need for foreign agents to serve their sentences upon their return to the Russian Federation.

Foreign agents convicted by Russian courts in absentia will be required to serve their sentences if they return to Russia. This was announced on June 24 by Oleg Sviridenko, Deputy Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation, at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

"All those foreign agents who disappeared from our country should now understand that if they want to return to our country, they will have to serve that sentence in absentia," TASS quoted him as saying.

Sviridenko recalled that criminal liability of foreign agents had been tightened in Russia, which allowed them to be tried in absentia. According to him, such sentences range from three to five years in prison.

On June 19, the Russian Ministry of Justice expanded the register of foreign agents to include three individuals and one organization. The list includes journalist Peter Ruzavin, former deputy of the Tomsk City Duma Ksenia Fadeeva (listed in the register of terrorists and extremists in the Russian Federation), artist Ekaterina Kuznetsova, as well as the Sphere project.
