A woman's sexual health does not depend on age, but on her overall health. On June 26, Elena Silantieva, an obstetrician-gynecologist, physiotherapist, MD, told the Izvestia correspondent on the sidelines of the Preventmed'26 forum.

According to the expert, as women age, processes occur that affect sexual functioning. One of the key factors is the change in appearance and perception of one's own body. Thus, psychological comfort and self-confidence are critically important for maintaining a healthy drive, so attention to physical activity and self-care becomes a priority.

Significant changes are also taking place in the gynecological field. Even before menopause, at the age of 40-45, signs of genital aging may appear. These include dryness and impaired sensitivity, which makes proximity uncomfortable.

"Subsequently, this results in vaginal atrophy, which is a diagnosis and requires serious treatment," the doctor said.

A decrease in the tone of the pelvic floor muscles also negatively affects the quality of life. Manifestations that seem insignificant can develop into serious pathologies. Thus, the weakening of ligaments and loss of collagen lead to organ prolapse, which affects the sexual activity of both partners.

The emotional state plays an equally important role in maintaining libido, the doctor added. Menopause is often accompanied by irritability, anxiety, and depressive states. Such mood swings can reduce attraction by themselves, regardless of physical factors.

As Silantieva noted, in order to maintain sexual activity at the age of 60 and older, it is necessary to adhere to an integrated approach to health. Proper nutrition helps to maintain the condition of the mucous membranes, and regular physical activity strengthens muscle tone. It is also important to maintain mental health through active social interaction and communication.

According to the doctor, there is an increasing awareness of the need for menopausal hormone therapy all over the world today. The Doctor of Medical Sciences added that this is becoming especially important for women, since modern medicine should not allow aging to reduce the quality of life.

Earlier, on April 9, Svetlana Khlynova, associate professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Pirogov University of the Russian Ministry of Health, said that during menstruation it is worth contacting a doctor if painkillers from the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, diclofenac or ibuprofen do not relieve pain.
