The biologist spoke about the main threats to the harvest in early summer
In early summer, plants are at risk of losing their ovaries due to drought, overflowing, or pest attacks. Biologist Timur Chernov told Izvestia about this on June 23, adding that maintaining a stable temperature regime, sufficient humidity and a balanced diet helps preserve crops.
"At the beginning of summer, the fruits are tied and each particular plant decides whether to give it fruits or go to the next season. In a situation where a plant is overfilled, or is in a drought, or is under attack by any parasites, it can simply get rid of the ovaries," the expert noted.
Chernov emphasized that optimal plant growth depends on a stable temperature regime, balanced nutrition and sufficient soil moisture. He added that plants are particularly sensitive to sudden temperature changes and lack of water on hot days.
To retain moisture and reduce stress in plants, the specialist advises using drip irrigation, mulching and regular monitoring of soil condition. Even with irregular visits to the site, such measures help minimize the loss of ovaries and flowers.
The biologist also emphasized the importance of mineral nutrition of plants. In spring, it is preferable to add nitrogen, in the middle of summer — potassium, and in autumn — phosphorus. This scheme allows you to strengthen the root system, conserve energy for fruit formation and increase resistance to diseases.
In addition, Chernov noted that preventive treatment of plants with biological preparations significantly reduces the risk of diseases and helps to increase yields.
"Biological drugs are preventive drugs. If everything is already blackened and rotten, it is absolutely pointless to use them. In a situation where you carry out regular preventive measures, this significantly reduces the risks of certain diseases of your plants," he explained.
Chernov stressed that timely care of plants, compliance with the rules of watering, fertilizing and protection from stress factors helps to preserve crops and minimize losses. This is especially true in conditions of unpredictable summer weather.
Forecaster and meteorologist Alexander Shuvalov told Izvestia on May 26 that June is a transitional month between spring and the peak of summer, so both abnormal cold and extreme heat can be recorded this month. At the same time, the average monthly temperature in June can vary greatly from year to year.
