Actions were held throughout Russia in memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War

On June 22, actions dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Mourning and the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War were held across Russia in memory of the dead. Izvestia publishes footage from the places of commemorative events.

"Today it is extremely important that everyone, young and old, remember this date and remember the feat of our grandfathers. It is important that we feel each other's shoulder, it is important that we come out with a united front, only together we can defeat the neo—fascists of the West and Europe," noted public and political activist Vera Mysina.

Yekaterinburg residents honored the memory of the victims and lit candles in the city. Large-scale fire paintings made of candles also appeared in Tula and Kazan. In St. Petersburg, a line of 1,418 lights symbolizing every day of the Great Patriotic War was built along the Palace Embankment, and a large-scale light projection "Candle of Memory" was displayed on the raised Palace Bridge.

At the same time, in Simferopol, school students brought flowers to the war memorial in Victory Square. In Donetsk, at the monument to the liberators of Donbass, SVO veterans and local residents lit trench candles.

Memorial and Mourning Day: 85 years since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War

The Germans planned to capture the Brest fortress in a few hours, but the Soviet soldiers held out for a month.

Earlier in the day, Izvestia published footage of a requiem concert at the Rzhevsky Memorial dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow and the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. The program of the memorable event included musical and poetic performances, theatrical performances and choreographic compositions dedicated to the feat of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War.
