Former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan has died at the age of 101.

Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan has died at the age of 100. This was reported by NBC News on June 22.

"Alan passed away this morning at our home at the age of 100 from complications caused by Parkinson's disease," his wife Andrea Mitchell said in a statement.

Greenspan was born on March 6, 1926 in New York City. He headed the Federal Reserve for five terms under four US presidents, from 1987 to 2006. He was responsible for one of the longest economic expansions in U.S. history, from 1991 to 2001. Greenspan has been called a "maestro" for his ability to manage the economy during periods of instability, including the Black Monday market crash of 1987 and the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

After leaving the Fed, Greenspan founded the consulting company Greenspan Associates LLC in Washington and wrote several books. Greenspan was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005), the Legion of Honor (2000) and knighted the British Empire (2002).
