Europe needs to prepare for a scenario in which the United States ceases to play a key role in ensuring collective defense through NATO. This is stated in a study published on June 22 by the Institute for Security Studies of the European Union (EUISS).

"The ultimate goal should be an alliance in which the Europeans provide the backbone of the system, and the United States no longer acts as an indispensable support state," the document says on the EUISS website.

The authors of the report point out that the region's defense capability will depend not on the growth of military spending, as called for by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Defense Commissioner Andrews Kubilius, but on the ability of European armies to act as a single force. According to experts, the existing coordination between the countries is no longer sufficient.

The document also proposes to move from national armies to integrated systems with common weapons and logistics. Such mechanisms should function with minimal support from Washington.

The day before, retired Norwegian General Robert Mood noted that NATO membership could make countries more vulnerable and weaken their defense capabilities. According to him, countries are becoming dependent on the alliance, which is why their defense capabilities are decreasing.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on June 18 at the summit of the heads of the ministries of defense of the member countries of the bloc that NATO is facing the largest restructuring in its history, it will cost the members of the alliance enormous efforts. According to him, it is necessary to create NATO 3.0.
