Zakharova pointed to the double standards in Germany in relation to the blockade
Berlin applies double standards towards the residents of besieged Leningrad: only Jewish besiegers who are recognized as victims of the Holocaust receive payments, while the rest of the city's residents at that time are left with nothing. This was announced on June 22 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Under far-fetched pretexts, he makes payments only to Jewish besiegers, recognizing them as victims of the Holocaust. At the same time, he refuses to extend compensation to the rest of the defenders and residents of the city who survived the blockade," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Zakharova also noted that in Germany, only one category of citizens who suffered during the occupation of Leningrad is consciously singled out, thus demonstrating double standards.
Earlier in the day, Zakharova said that Russia would not allow Germany to hush up the issue of recognizing the genocide of the Soviet people by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War, including in relation to the siege of Leningrad. According to her, the German authorities prefer to use more general language when talking about the "atrocities" of the Nazi regime and the "suffering" of its victims.
On January 27, the Russian Embassy in Germany, on the occasion of the Day of the Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade, announced that Berlin should officially recognize the siege of Leningrad and other crimes of the Nazi regime as genocide of the peoples of the USSR. The diplomatic mission also once again called on the German authorities to extend individual compensation payments to all besiegers, regardless of their nationality.
