US President Donald Trump said that he would not like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to be his fan, since she did not take part in resolving issues in the Strait of Hormuz. This was announced on June 19 by NBC News correspondent at the White House Gabe Gutierrez.

"She was a big fan of mine. But I don't want her to be my fan, because she wasn't involved — along with the NATO group — in matters related to the [Strait of Hormuz]," Trump said in a telephone conversation, quoted by Gutierrez on his Facebook page.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned visit to the United States on June 19 in protest at Trump's remarks about Meloni. Earlier, Trump told the Italian TV channel La7 that at the G7 summit in France, Meloni persistently asked for a photo with him and, according to him, caused him pity.
