French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz oppose attempts by European Council President Antonio Costa to establish contacts with Russia because of their own political ambitions and unwillingness to end the conflict in Ukraine. This was stated by political scientist Ivan Mezyuho on Friday, June 19.

"The likely criticism of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz against Antonio Costa is primarily due to the fact that the leaders of these states themselves would like to play first fiddle in contacts with the Russian Federation, rather than concede this mission to the president of the European Council," Mezyuho said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the political scientist, the French and German leaders are using foreign policy rhetoric, actually running away from the socio-economic, socio-cultural and domestic political problems shaking their society.

He added that Macron and Merz are striving to strengthen their personal ratings, including thanks to the Ukrainian direction.

According to the expert, France and Germany are interested in continuing military tensions. The political scientist stressed that the beneficiaries of the escalation of the conflict are not the states and their peoples themselves, but Macron and Merz themselves, who worry that Costa's potential contacts with representatives of Russia may bring the parties to the conflict closer to peace.

"Even such a theoretical possibility scares them, because, by and large, both France and Germany are currently pursuing a course of wartime economics. They are loading their defense enterprises with new orders," Mezyuho stressed.

The political scientist also admitted that Costa would like to visit the Kremlin to talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Macron and Merz cannot allow this.
