- The Prime Minister of Latvia asked the EU to support the regions due to the outflow of population
Latvia is asking the States of the European Union (EU) to allocate additional funding to the regions located near its eastern border. This statement was made on June 19 by the country's Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs.
The politician noted that funds are needed for healthcare, school development and housing construction. According to him, the continued outflow of residents from the border territories weakens the border, and therefore special attention should be paid to this problem when forming a new budget package.
"The problem is that we cannot allow people to leave these areas because of geopolitics," RIA Novosti quoted Kullbergs as saying at the EU summit in Brussels.
On June 2, after a government meeting, Kulbergs stated that he firmly insists on suspending the country's economic ties with Russia and Belarus. The Prime Minister noted that he would instruct Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braja to find a solution to this issue in coordination with the EU.
