From the point of view of acoustic physiology, the auricle is not a cosmetic element, but a complex frequency filter that forms an individual spatial map of sounds, audiologist Nikita Dikopoltsev warned in a conversation with Izvestia. Therefore, the popular operation to create a hearing loss can change not only the appearance, but also the perception of the direction of sound: a person will be worse able to determine where the signal is coming from.

At the same time, the risks of complications during repeated operations on the auricle (after the fashion for protruding ears has passed) increase significantly due to scarring of the cartilage, which can lead to a narrowing of the entrance to the ear canal, the specialist noted.

"Microscopic changes in the shell relief alter the spectral delays. With repeated intervention, when the fashion changes, the cartilage will already be changed. If it is fixed too aggressively or a rough scar forms, soft tissues can tighten the lumen of the passage. And the more operations there are in this area, the higher the risks," the source explained.

He also warned against intentionally injuring the ears for the sake of a "brutal" appearance, as this can lead to irreversible deformity and severe inflammation.
