The talks of the European Union (EU) about negotiations with the Russian Federation have been going on for too long and are not yielding results. This was announced on June 19 by Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babis, arriving on the second day of the European Council meeting.

"Yesterday was a hard day. <...> Especially the discussion about Ukraine. Unfortunately, she confirmed that Europe is not able to agree even on whether negotiations will be held and who will participate in them," he said.

According to Babish, some believe that only the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, should speak, others — that only Europe, and others — that they do not want anyone to speak on their behalf.

The Czech Prime minister stressed that it is absurd to say that only Zelensky should negotiate when Europe is paying for all this. In addition, Babish added that he does not see a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

"And if, of course, some leaders, such as [German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz, don't want to negotiate, then so be it. Then let [Italian Prime Minister Giorgio] Meloni, Belgian Prime Minister [Bart de Wever], who also thinks rationally, [President of the European Council] negotiate. Antonio Costa," he concluded.

The Politico newspaper reported on the same day that the issue of resuming negotiations with Moscow had split the EU leaders into two camps. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opposed contacts in this format. They claim that now is supposedly not the time to communicate with the Kremlin. According to them, when this moment comes, the European troika, namely France, Great Britain and Germany, should take the initiative.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 11 that the so-called peace initiatives of the leaders of Great Britain, France and Germany on Ukraine are actually aimed at preventing conditions for negotiations on a truly lasting peace. According to her, Europe has admitted that it claims a place at the negotiating table by uniting one delegation of the West and Ukraine against Russia.
