Attempts to get rid of acne, redness or neoplasms on the skin with the help of cosmetic procedures without prior diagnosis can lead not only to aesthetic defects, but also to serious health problems. Doctors of the V.A. Rakhmanov Clinic of Skin and Venereal Diseases at Sechenov University told Izvestia about this on June 20.

According to experts, one of the most common mistakes remains contacting a cosmetologist in the presence of inflammatory skin diseases without consulting a dermatologist. In such cases, aggressive procedures, including chemical peels and cleanses, can worsen the course of the disease and lead to complications.

As noted by Lyudmila Karbysheva, a dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, Ph.D., patients often try to solve the problem of external manifestations without eliminating its cause. As a result, instead of improving the skin condition, there is increased inflammation and scarring.

As an example, the specialist cited a patient with rosacea who repeatedly underwent cosmetic procedures, but her condition only worsened. After contacting a dermatologist, the girl was prescribed medication, which allowed her to relieve inflammation and restore skin function. Only then did the doctors begin to aesthetically correct the effects of the disease.

A similar situation occurred with another patient who was trying to fight acne with regular facial cleanses. Instead of getting rid of the rashes, the girl was faced with the formation of deep scars. Complex treatment, including drug therapy, laser correction and other procedures, was required to restore the skin.

Experts emphasize that cosmetology and dermatology should work together. According to doctors, it is first necessary to achieve remission or complete control of the disease, and only then to deal with the elimination of cosmetic defects.

Doctors are particularly concerned about cases of removal of moles, papillomas and other formations without prior examination. According to Ekaterina Vertieva, a dermatologist, oncologist and cosmetologist, some types of skin cancer can disguise themselves as harmless cosmetic flaws.

For example, basal cell carcinoma may look like a scar, spot, ulcer, or small nodule, while squamous cell carcinoma may resemble an ordinary wart or scaly spot. Melanoma is considered even more dangerous, which, if untimely diagnosed, spreads rapidly through the body.

The doctors told about a patient who had been trying for a long time to get rid of a non-healing "scar" on her face with the help of cosmetic procedures. It later turned out that it was a basal cell carcinoma. As a result, the woman needed a complicated operation to remove the tumor.

Another patient had her mole repeatedly removed without the necessary tests. When the formation reappeared, it was mistaken for scar tissue. Subsequently, doctors diagnosed melanoma with multiple metastases.

Experts have noticed that skin cancer is increasingly being detected in young people today. Previously, such diagnoses were more often made to patients over the age of 60, but now the disease is often found in people aged 20-40 years. One of the reasons doctors call the active effect of ultraviolet radiation.

"Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are best disguised as cosmetic defects. So, basal cell carcinoma develops from the uppermost layer of the skin, on which a red spot, plaque, scar, ulcer or shiny nodule appear. This disease almost never metastasizes, but it has an aggressive scleroderma—like form that can destroy surrounding tissues, not excluding even bones," said Ekaterina Vertieva, a dermatologist, oncologist, cosmetologist at the V.A. Rakhmanov Clinic of Skin and Venereal Diseases at Sechenov University.

Doctors recommend paying close attention to any skin changes. Ulcers that do not heal for a long time, growing spots and plaques with peeling, pink nodules or formations that cannot be treated should be alerted.

If such symptoms occur, experts recommend contacting a dermatologist first. If necessary, the doctor will perform a dermatoscopy, prescribe additional studies and refer the patient to an oncologist. Only after the exclusion of serious diseases can one safely proceed to aesthetic procedures.

On June 9, Anastasia Razbezhkina, a dermatovenerologist and cosmetologist, told us which mistake is the most important in summer skin care. The expert noted that the choice of SPF depends on the conditions of being outdoors. For a short stay indoors, funds with SPF 15 may be sufficient, while for walking it is better to choose SPF 30 or 50.
