The European Union (EU) Summit recommended that the European Commission and the European External Action Service, led by Kai Kallas, finalize the initiative to ban entry to the EU for veterans of the Special Military Operation (SVO). This is stated in the final statement of the summit, published on June 18 on the website of the European Council.

The document claims that former Russian fighters who took part in the SVO in Ukraine allegedly pose a potential threat to the internal security of the community in the long term.

"The European Council calls for further technical work to assess possible solutions to this problem, without prejudice to the competence of member States in this area," the publication says.

However, the next restrictions will not have a significant impact on the Russian economy, experts believe.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 18 that EU countries already "don't know what to come up with" when discussing a ban on entry into the territory of the union for Russian citizens who served in the Russian Armed Forces after the start of a special military operation. She added that EU sanctions are increasingly becoming international restrictions, causing damage to third countries.
