Magyar expressed doubts about Ukraine's admission to the European Union

Hungary has doubts about Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU), and its position is shared by some other countries. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced this on June 18 upon arrival at the unification summit in Brussels.

He recalled that the Hungarian government approved the opening of negotiations on the first group of issues on the admission of Ukraine, since Kiev agreed to return the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. At the same time, the politician noted that the positions of different member states of the community "are very different."

"To be honest, there are those among the member states who say the same thing as us," TASS quoted Magyar as saying.

The Prime Minister added that Hungary supports the admission of candidates to the European Union solely on the basis of their personal achievements and performance. According to him, the existence of two different formats of the accession process is unacceptable.

On the same day, the Euractiv portal reported that France and the Netherlands had blocked Kiev's accelerated entry into the EU. It was reported that Berlin's proposal for Kiev's associate membership without voting rights remains the most realistic option on the negotiating table.

President of the European Council Antonio Costa said on June 15 that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU had officially begun. He stated that these discussions were allegedly aimed at resolving the conflict and establishing a "just and lasting" peace. At the same time, Euractiv pointed out the EU's fear of imposing a specific date for Ukraine's accession.
