Lavrov pointed to Europe's interest in Russia's defeat in Ukraine
Moscow does not abandon contacts with Europe, but perceives it as a party directly interested in Russia's defeat in Ukraine, and the Europeans themselves openly position this. This was stated on June 19 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an article for Politico Europe, which was canceled at the last moment by the editorial board.
"We do not refuse to contact anyone. However, we perceive Europe as a party to the conflict interested in Russia's defeat, and the Europeans openly position themselves in this way," Lavrov said in an article published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in such circumstances, the dialogue with Europe cannot be built as if it were an impartial observer. He noted that European leaders need to understand that the model of regional security that has been built in Europe for decades, starting with the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, has been destroyed by their own hands, and there will be no return to it.
Lavrov stressed that it is now necessary to move towards creating a new continental security architecture that is open to all Eurasian countries and reflects the multipolar realities of our time. The principle of equal and indivisible security, trampled on in the Euro-Atlantic structures, can be implemented precisely in the new Eurasian architecture. He noted that the European side has the opportunity to join this work when the appropriate conditions appear.
For a meaningful dialogue, according to Lavrov, it is necessary to restore trust, undermined by the anti-Russian actions of the West and Europe. This can only be done by practical steps that prove the rejection of using diplomacy as a cover for expansionist plans.
Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said on June 18 that European countries are guided by the misconception that the situation on the battlefield is changing in favor of the Ukrainian forces. According to him, this explains the position of European states that advocate the continuation of the conflict.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 11 that the so-called peace initiatives of the leaders of Great Britain, France and Germany on Ukraine are actually aimed at preventing conditions for negotiations on a truly lasting peace. According to her, Europe has admitted that it claims a place at the negotiating table by uniting one delegation of the West and Ukraine against Russia.
