Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova promised a tough response to the latest European Union (EU) sanctions at a briefing on June 18.

She called the restrictions illegitimate, illegal and self-revealing. Brussels does not notice the ineffectiveness of these measures, which harm, first of all, the European Union itself and the rest of the world, the diplomat stressed.

"With each new sanctions decision, the absurdity of this course increases, reflecting its entire unsightly shadow side," she said.

European politicians, according to Zakharova, are trying to figure out how to increase the number of sanctions, but they cannot make them work against Russia so that they do not hit them with a boomerang.

"It is simply impossible to do this, taking into account our retaliatory measures, and many other factors. <...> Effective tough responses will follow from our side," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

On June 15, the European Union expanded the list of anti-Russian sanctions, adding more than 80 individuals and organizations to it. The list includes Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan. In addition, restrictions were imposed against Oleg Yevtushenko, executive director of Rostec State Corporation, Bekhan Ozdoev, industrial director of the armaments cluster of the state corporation, and Alexey Rakhmanov, former general director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation.
