A resident of Yakutia was given a tougher punishment for the deaths of two people on the river

The Supreme Court of Yakutia has increased the punishment for a driver who was found guilty of the deaths of two people. The car fell through the ice outside the official crossing.

The tragedy occurred in December 2025 in the area of "Darkylakh". The Toyota Estima car with six passengers fell through the ice, the temperature that day was -44...-47 degrees. A young girl died in the cabin. One of the passengers was able to get out of the water, but died of hypothermia. The rest of the passengers suffered various injuries, including frostbite on their fingers and feet. This is reported by IA YakutiaMedia.

It was established that the defendant was engaged in private transportation, but did not have a license to transport passengers. In addition, the car did not pass the inspection due to a crack on the windshield.

On April 16, the man was sentenced to five years in prison to serve his sentence in a penal colony. The court recovered 4.9 million rubles in favor of the two victims. The verdict received an appeal from the state prosecutor and a complaint from one of the victims. They insisted that the court had imposed too lenient a punishment.

The Court of Appeal changed the verdict and appointed a general regime colony as the place of serving the sentence.
