Connecting multiple devices to the same outlet through the tees significantly increases the load on the line. Arseniy Buryakov, head of the Laboratory of Terahertz Spintronics at RTU MIREA, told about this on Thursday, June 18.

He explained that the electrical network in the apartment and the splitters are designed for limited current. And if several powerful consumers are assembled into one splitter — chargers, an air conditioner, a microwave oven, a heater, a kettle — the total power can approach the maximum value and exceed the permissible load on contacts and wiring.

"The main danger arises at the junctions. In the tee, the current passes through additional contact groups, and each connection has a non-zero resistance. At high load, part of the energy at these transient resistances is converted into heat, and the temperature rises not in the device cable, but in the contacts," Buryakov explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the expert, the situation is aggravated by extension cords and tees connected to each other by a chain. Each new node adds a transient resistance, worsens the contacts and creates another point of local heating.

Buryakov clarified that compact splitters without grounding and cheap devices with thin brass or similar plates inside the case pose the greatest risk.

He added that it is safest to connect powerful appliances — heaters, microwaves, air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators — directly to a stationary outlet, without assembling several energy-intensive devices at one power point.
