- The NYT has learned about Israel's concerns about the deal between the United States and Iran
The Israeli authorities perceive the peace agreement between the United States and Iran as a "catastrophic surrender," The New York Times (NYT) wrote on June 18.
"Analysts said that from the Israeli point of view, this is a disastrous deal, since it does not achieve any of Israel's military goals and, possibly, leaves the country in a worse position on each of them," the material says.
According to the newspaper, the Iranian authorities are coming out of the war "even tougher and more confident," and the agreement does not solve the issue of Iran's missile arsenal in any way.
"The hundreds of billions of dollars that Iran could receive in the form of sanctions relief, asset defrosting, or reconstruction assistance could eventually be used to finance new missile systems in Iran and provide assistance to Tehran's militia allies in the Middle East," the NYT writes.
It clarifies that discussions around the Iranian nuclear program, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "tried to eliminate throughout his career," have been postponed to a later stage of the US-Iranian negotiations.
"Iran has emerged from this situation stronger, and I believe it is now a regional hegemon. They opposed the United States, the world's superpower. They may have missiles, and there is nothing in the agreement except that we will discuss it. This is a victory for Iran over the United States and Israel," said Chuck Freilich, former deputy National Security Adviser to Israel.
Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum on the cessation of hostilities on June 17. The signing took place remotely, and the memorandum entered into force.
According to Bloomberg, on June 18, several tankers, including those belonging to Saudi Arabia, began passing through the Strait of Hormuz after the conclusion of agreements between the United States and Iran.
