Meloni named the criteria for choosing a negotiator from the EU with Russia

The European Union should nominate a single candidate for negotiations on the situation in Ukraine, who would represent the "middle power" of the union. This was announced on June 17 by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Speaking at a press conference in France, the Italian politician noted that the participation of representatives of leading European countries as mediators could complicate the dialogue.

"I think it would be very difficult to suggest a person from one of the major European countries. I think this will make it difficult to reach an agreement, so I would appeal to, say, the middle powers of the European Union," Meloni said.

The head of the Italian government explained that at the upcoming meeting of EU leaders she would propose to approve the candidacy of a specific negotiator. In her opinion, the current variety of negotiation formats deprives each participant of the opportunity to speak on behalf of the whole of Europe.

However, Trump may demand that the Europeans and Zelensky compromise with Russia.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on June 17 that European states had begun actively discussing the possible resumption of dialogue with Russia.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a press conference at the G7 summit on June 16 that European countries were ready to hold peace talks with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, he pointed out the intentions of European countries to continue and increase support for Kiev.
